The Green Eyed Monster and Trading

Jealousy is everywhere in life and very rarely leads to anything that can be classed as positive. Its destructive and helps to bring negative emotions to the surface in even the nicest of people. 😖 😡

In trading its more accute than most industries, with competition, power, status and wealth ensuring that comparisons, gossip and envious glances are common place (I am putting that very midly!!!).

By concentrating on our own performance we can avoid all the negativity and fully focus on making the most of the amazing opportunities that trading offers us!

Enjoy the video.

Be Authentic to be Successful

In todays video I discuss how authenticity bought me success in trading and has now done the same in coaching.

By trying to be something we are not, we cause internal conflict and limit our own potential. I also discuss my new partnership with @ New Level Results, which promises to offer my clients even greater opportunities.

Dealing With Stress in Trading

With commodity markets back in turmoil, I thought it was probably a good time to do a video on dealing with stress!

During my time with RWE, BTG Pactual and Mercuria I had moments of total unadulterated pleasure and also moments when I contemplated life itself.

Today’s video adds together the things I did well, the things I did not so well and also all the stuff I have gleaned from my time out of the market doing my coaching.

I can’t name you all personally but thanks to all those who supported me throughout my career, at the office, in the pub, down the gym and on the football pitch. They were amazing times and I will always remember them fondly!

Hope it helps a little. Rob

Is there ever a valid excuse for trading losses?

Are there any valid excuses for trading losses?

We have all lost money as traders, but how come some people deal with it better than others and what caused people like The London Whale, Nick Leeson and Kweku Adoboli to continue digging themselves and their companies into asteroid sized craters?!?!

Part of the answer has to lie with cognitive dissonance, which essentially occurs when something or someone upsets our values and beliefs and we can't deal with it. As traders we have great belief in ourselves and our trades, so when a trade goes against us cognitive dissonance can easily kick in. Faced with a choice of upsetting the ego and admitting a mistake or reframing the circumstances and burying the head, many a trader has chosen the latter and racked up losses both great and small.

Todays video discusses the above in more detail and evaluates whether there is ever a valid excuse for not taking responsibility for a trading loss.

Enjoy!

Cognitive Diversity and Women in Commodity Trading

According to @ Forbes, “Cognitive diversity” in the workplace refers to the wide variety of ways your employees think and solve problems. The term may also be used to refer to different work styles, learning styles, personality styles, perspectives, backgrounds, or even cognitive levels within the workforce. A team with extensive cognitive diversity is highly likely to perform better than a team full of similar personalities and backgrounds, that view things from the same perspective. Commodity Trading has always been and remains a heavily male dominated sector and is surely missing a trick. ?!?By getting more women and more diversity involved, innovation, problem solving, culture and P and L are all going to improve. #trading #team #cognitivediversity #womenintrading #lustforlifecoaching

The Grass isn't Always Greener

During my career I saw many people move companies and make the ultimate in bad trades. They sacrificed work-life balance and happiness for ego and the promise of Monopoly money that never came!

Hopefully this video sheds some light on the reasons why these decisions are taken and how to make sure you make a good one, when your time comes (if you are a good trader, it will!).
